11-01-2025 Sarah Carter and Corinne Shark at Barbara’s Books (Chicago)

Seven years ago, fast friends Sarah Carter and Corinne Shark had no idea they were running headlong into the destructive forces of corporate corruption. Neither had reason to suspect such as their husbands accepted new work positions – one as pastor at Willow Creek Church, the other as lead investigator for a renowned anti-trafficking non-profit.

And yet, almost simultaneously but in different hemispheres of the globe, each learned about cover-ups of sexual misconduct within the organizations.

As the scandals hit the news waves, the flames licked higher and hotter in their lives, burning the faith they’d known to ashes, tearing apart their lives, and backing the mothers into a desperate fight to protect their children and families.

They fled to the desert. To Arizona.

There, in that wild and arid land, the friends stayed tethered by phone calls, text messages, and the occasional trek across cracked ground. They lit candles and shared “with you” assurances as they battled the desolation that accompanies a personal reckoning with the Creator. They came to recognize a pattern to sex scandals and a system designed to protect the perpetrators – even in churches and non-profits – while the harmed ones were tossed aside or even systematically destroyed to protect the organization.

On Saturday, November 1, at 3pm, the Yorktown Center location of Barbara’s Books becomes the launch point for the release of Sarah Carter and Corinne Shark’s sojourns through the fire and, ultimately, into the bright blue sky, where they take their place amidst the odyssey of wise phoenixes.
